Color Photographs From A Very Dreary Time

You have to look at these pictures. They are rare color photographs from the depression and into the forties. The quality is surprisingly good and I love how the colors make the time period seem less nostalgic and more real. A must see.

Polaroid Is Coming Back

Billy took this one of me and Kath at Kent State. Notice the gorgeous job he did graffiti-ing the boom box. The 80s, dear God. I wish that I still had that feathered hat, though. And the really tight suit that I believe we found in the theater department's dumpster. Ah, youth. I'm lucky I didn't catch something from all the second hand stuff we wore back then.
So, here's the deal; Polaroid is bringing back the One Step camera which means they will start making film again next year. I have two cameras, the little one that uses sticker film and one of the last models they ever made. I hope that the reissue does really well so that they remake all the different kinds of film. I don't want to have to buy yet another camera.
But, halleluyah! Every time I have gone to a party and shared the pictures with everybody, or taken a photo of some little kid's Halloween costume that he gets to keep, it's been a huge hit. It's one of the ways I bribe people into liking me. Works real well becuase most people love to see pictures of themselves. Go figure.

This Explains A Lot

The Godfather Photo Album

Who doesn't love The Godfather movies? So much talent in one movie is a truly amazing feat, and can you imagine directing all those egos? I'd have an ulcer the size of Lake Tahoe.

I just ran across a book by Steve Shapiro, the official still photographer for the first two movies and it's full of great behind the scenes pictures. It came out last year and for those of you in London, he has a show at Hamilton's Gallery running from tomorrow until March 28th.

Yet Another One Bites the Dust

They are going to stop making Polaroid film by the end of the year. That's right, digital is steadily gobbling up all "lesser" forms of photography. I mean I love digital but it would be nice to have a polaroid around because the pictures are so spontaneous and it's fun to wait around to see how wacky they turn out. (Case in point, the photo above of my friends Billy and Kathy posed next to their designs at Kent State in the 80s)

They used to be a mainstay in fashion photography but now most cameras are hooked up to a laptop for instant viewing. God, I'm old.

Christies is hosting an auction December 16-17th of over 100 photographs of the iconic actress that should fetch over $1 million. There will be images by Andre de Dienes, Bert Stern and Richard Avedon spanning her entire career from the collection of New York couple Leon and Michaela Constantiner. There are also other photos of some naked bitches like Kate Moss and Charlotte Rampling, meh. Who is going to buy pictures of Moss's raisin nipples when they could have a one of a kind Marilyn Monroe? Her stuff is just going to get rarer and rarer, while Kate's nekkid ass can be downloaded any day of the week.
