Ah, yes. It's baseball season again. Time for SportsCenter to be 90% MLB, 8%hockey/basketball playoffs and 2% golf. Time for overpriced beer and praying that the Indians go over .500. Time for bobbleheads and promotional refrigerator magnets. Time for fireworks and ecstatically skipping back to the car after a ninth inning 3-run homer by Grady Sizemore. Time to try to say no to pulled pork and biscuits and pizza and nachos on the box seats level. Time for crawling into bed after eleven bloated and woozy from whatever Great Lakes beer they have on tap.
The good news? Nobody goes to the games anymore. The parking is great, the seats are cheap and if you are downtown with nothing to do, you don't have to worry about the game being sold out. There is one thing you do have to worry about. The freaking mascots. I attended a game a few years back and it just so happened to be on my birthday. My brother and the dork I was dating at the time decided it would be extra special if Cleveland's mascot, Slider, said Happy Birthday to me. He/she grabbed me from behind, rubbing his/her grubby kiddie booger stained wooly mammoth paws all over my face and chest. I had nightmares. No joke. They're still funny from afar, though.

Clash of the Cretins
Do Philly and New York have the worst fans?
I can't answer for Philly but I did fear for my life at a Yankees game back in the early 90s. Then again, one of my favorite people in the world is a huge fan of the pinstripes and even worked for them so, yeah. I'm going to be wishy-washy on this one.
But what is with the orange and brown suits? I am not getting that part. Must be a Fall reference because I have worn my Steelers gear in Browns' stadium and only one drunk ass dude with beer fueled bravery said anything other than good humored insult banter. And then he saw my 6'4" brother and shut the hell up.

Is Kate Hudson The New Annie Savoy?

You remember Bull Durham. Susan Sarandon played Annie, a baseball junkie/philosophizing guru for the new meat in the minor leagues. She took on someone new each season to help them learn to get their head straight before they could excell and make it to the majors. If Tim Robbins' character had to wear a garter belt on the mound (oooo, double entendre) or submit to being tied up to improve his game, then so be it.
And here we have Kate Hudson licking on A-Rod's rod. AND this is the first time that he has shown up in the post season. Hitting clutch 2 run homers, looking confident and like a leader for a change instead of taking uo space and dragging the team down.
She's done it before. Lance Armstrong, PGA golfing hottie Adam Scott. As soon as someone on the Penguins starts slumping, I am going to pray that she hooks up with them.

Angel's Nick Adenhart Killed by Hit and Run Driver

He just pitched last night. Six scoreless innings. So sad. And look at him. He looks like a kid still. Well, he is only 22. All three people in the car with him were killed when a van blew through a red light. This better not be a drunk driver.
Here are the official statements:
Adenhart is survived by his father Jim and mother Janet. His family released the following statement:
"Nick's family expresses sincere gratitude for all the help the Angels have provided. He lived his dream and was blessed to be part of an organization comprised of such warm, caring, and compassionate people. The Angels were his extended family. Thanks to all of Nick's loyal supporters and fans throughout his career. He will always be in everyone's hearts forever."
Angels General Manager Tony Reagins issued the following statement on behalf of the club:"The Angels family has suffered a tremendous loss today. We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick's family, friends' loved ones and fans."

Collector's Item for a Lucky Yankees Fan
This beauty is up for sale at Grey Flannel Auctions right now, so if you have a couple grand lying around it could be yours. According to Deadspin, if you caught Mantle when he was hungover or still drunk from the night before he would write pretty much anything you asked him to on whatever you asked him to write it on. How about 'Lou Gehrig had it coming' or 'Elston Howard is a rascist?' No? 'Roger Maris is a pussy?' Still no? I'm just not funny today. Oh well.Unfortunately, the only way you can get him to sign a ball now is to wear a Red Sox jersey to a Yankees game, in which case you deserve to die. So go ahead. I think the world just might be a better place with a few less Sox fans crawling on it.

Does Roberto Alomar Have AIDS?

I have no idea if this is true or not but the lawsuit sure is real. I am a little confused, though. She doesn't have the virus, so what the hell is she suing for? I would be relieved and grateful, not sue happy. Here is the story from this morning's Daily News.

Baseball great Roberto Alomar has full-blown AIDS but insisted on having unprotected sex, his ex-girlfriend charged Tuesday in a bombshell lawsuit.
The shocking claim was leveled by Ilya Dall, 31, who said she lived with the ex-Met for three years and watched in horror as his health worsened.
In papers filed in state and federal court, Dall said Alomar finally got tested in January 2006 while suffering from a cough, fatigue and shingles.
"The test results of him being HIV-positive was given to him and the plaintiff on or about Feb.6, 2006," the $15 million negligence suit says.
Nine days later, the couple went to see a disease specialist who discovered a mass in the retired second baseman's chest, the court papers say.
Alomar's skin had turned purple, he was foaming at the mouth and a spinal tap "showed he had full-blown AIDS," the suit says.
Alomar, 41, who quit baseball over health issues in 2005, could not be reached for comment.
His lawyer, Charles Bach, would not say whether Alomar is HIV-positive. "We believe this is a totally frivolous lawsuit. These allegations are baseless," Bach said. "He's healthy and would like to keep his health status private. We'll do our talking in court."
Alomar's father, Mets bench coach Sandy Alomar, said the claims were news to him. "That's the first time we ever heard of that," he said from Puerto Rico.
He didn't think his son could keep a serious illness secret. "I imagine I would know," he said.
Dall, a mother of two who has run a massage spa in Queens, would not discuss the suit.
"I have no comment," she said outside her lavish home in Whitestone, Queens, after getting out of a black Cadillac Escalade.
She referred inquiries to her lawyer, Anthony Piacentini, who declined to comment.
The suit was filed Jan. 30 in Queens Supreme Court. Alomar had it transferred to Brooklyn Federal Court Tuesday.
The court papers outline the couple's relationship, starting in 2002. A month after they began dating, Alomar convinced Dall to have unprotected sex and assured her he was disease-free, the suit alleges.
In 2004, Dall says she noticed cold sores in his mouth. In 2005, after a physical exam ordered by the Tampa Bay Rays, he was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia purpura, a blood disorder sometimes linked to HIV, she claims.
The doctor told him to have an HIV test and he refused, she says, stating he had been tested and was AIDS-free.
In April 2005, Alomar told Dall he was suffering from erectile dysfunction and confided "he was raped by two Mexican men after playing a ballgame in New Mexico or a Southwestern state when he was 17," the suit says.
It goes on to say that around the same time Alomar developed a persistent cough and was bedridden with extreme fatigue.
He developed thrush, a yeast infection, and was told by a doctor to take an HIV test - but refused, Dall claims.
"I don't have HIV," he told her repeatedly, the suit charges.
A few months later, the couple moved to Cleveland, where Alomar supposedly tested positive. Dall claims that after she learned Alomar had AIDS, she tested negative and no longer had unprotected sex with him.
They broke up last October.
She is demanding at least $15 million in punitive damages, claiming Alomar caused her emotional distress and exposed her children to the virus.
"He jeopardized the health, well-being and life of the plaintiff, which caused her to have a fear of contracting AIDS, often referred to as AIDS phobia," the suit says.
Considered one of baseball's greatest second basemen, Alomar stirred controversy in 1996 by spitting in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck.
The incident prompted fellow ump Al Clark to say, "If I were John, I'd insist that Robbie Alomar take an AIDS test."
HIV has never been transmitted through saliva, however, and last night Hirschbeck said he had no concerns about his safety - or hard feelings from their on-field run-in.
"You're telling me something I'm shocked at," Hirschbeck said. "I wish him nothing but the best."

Speaking of the Pirates
Has anyone watched the 'Million Dollar Arm' special on ESPN? If you didn't, here's the deal; a Major League scout who once was a pitching coach for USC put together a baseball talent hunt in India. He wanted to see if he could find the next great pitcher in a country that loves cricket, but hasn't really latched onto baseball. He found these two guys who are sweet beyond words, grew up with nothing but the bare neccessities and now have a chance to make it in The Show here in the states. And the Pirates drafted them, yay! Here's Rinku and Dinesh's blog.
