Want Some Art? I Got Some Art Right Here

I cleaned every damn photo out of my phone today. I'm trying to get organized during my down time this Summer so I am sharing some mad beauty and wicked AHT with you all. This group is all trippy and shit because I just so happened to discover my psychedelic camera settings while we were walking around and looking at Hindu statues.

I like these Hindu Gods. They have lots of arms, beatific smiles, and Lord knows they love their joorey, just like I do. So, that pretty much exhausted my fascination with solarizing and sepia toning things. Hey! You know who should have done that? Weiner! He should have solarized his penis before he sent it, or photographed it in negative. The hackers might have thought it was something artsy and boring, and I wouldn't have to listen to people talk about how a guy should resign over dick pictures.

More art/pop culture comparisons after the jump.

Victorian Village In San Diego

When we were in San Diego last month, I dragged Mr. McSlore up to Old Town to see the completed Victorian village in Heritage Park. It's tucked way in the back, behind the cheesy Mexican themed bars and touristy Mexican shops and, well, Mexican everything. Not my favorite place in San Diego, but worth the trek just to gaze at the amazing restoration. Last time I was here, it was 1988 and they were just getting started with the landscaping. It was basically just sculpted dirt at that point. Now it's this tiny oasis of beauty.

Feast your eyes after the jump.

Dali and Disney

If only Disney continued to collaborate with artists. Maybe I wouldn't hate them so much. At any rate, this is beautiful-

Some pictures I took of the Dali painting at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Dream, 1931.

A closer view.

Saint Louis

I can be an airhead. I didn't realize until two weeks ago that the camera in my phone had a 'solarize' option. I discovered it by accident while I was trying to take a picture of Mr. McSlore's ass in the Ancient Art section of the St. Louis Art Museum. In lieu of showing you his ass, which may not be as fascinating to you as it is to me, I give you the towering statue of Saint Louis out front of the museum-

Here he is, in all his glory, un-solarized. He looks as though he would fit right in with ghost army from Return of the King.

The man depicted here which the city was named after, is King Louis IX of France. Not sure why they chose a dead guy from the 13th century but he makes for a pretty cool statue, and they do have a fair collection of armor in the museum. Nothing like the Met in New York, but who has that kind of funding?

This could do some serious damage to the Jehovahs that keep showing up on my doorstep-

I just love the staircases in and out of the exhibit. The ceiling is gorgeous too. I could live in there. Hey, speaking of which, do any of you remember a children's book about a girl and her little brother that spend the night in the Met? I can't recall the name..

Color Photographs From A Very Dreary Time

You have to look at these pictures. They are rare color photographs from the depression and into the forties. The quality is surprisingly good and I love how the colors make the time period seem less nostalgic and more real. A must see.
I love the lady in the red kerchief and her matching red nail polish. That's how I would have done it, Lord knows.

"The Man Within" Trailer

William S. Burroughs was an actual maverick and one of the few people on this earth who was truly free. All except that decades long heroin habit, that is. He revolutionized the novel as confessional in a way that Allen Ginsberg changed poetry and Hunter S. Thompson changed journalism.

This documentary is done interview style with people like John Waters, Iggy Pop and Gus Van Sant. It comes out later this fall. Go see it just to watch the old man shoot a gun with the glee of a three year old with his first toy truck.

Thierry Mugler is combining 23 scents with 6 second musical accompaniments at the Peter B. Lewis Theater at the Guggenheim starting May 31st. A scent organ designed by Flakt Woods will release dry perfume through little microphones that are attatched to each chair. I think that it's freaking sold out but if any of you get a chance to go, please email me.

A dinosaur at a bar.

An airplane made of poo.
This website is run by a four year old dinosaur obsessed little girl who makes her artist Daddy draw whatever strikes her fancy. The pictures and commentary are really cute, so check it out:

Koons and his Basketballs of Douchiosity
Hirst Gallery opening

I've met Jeff Koons by the way. He was a complete asshole. And Joyce took his picture nude with that Italian porn star he was dating for a while. He kept asking why it was so cold in the studio (it wasn't) because he was suffering EXTREME shrinkage. That's all the art world gossip that I have for now.

Tobie Giddio Interview

Tobie is an amazing artist that has been a close friend of mine since I first met her in NYC in the 80s. She has evolved from doing those iconic Bergdorf ads to a gorgeous and totally original abstract sensibility in her fashion illustration today. Diane Pernet has posted her interview with Walter Cessna and here's the link: http://dianepernet.typepad.com/diane/2009/02/tobie-giddio-interview.html

There are a lot more illustrations there for you to check out and drool over. I need to get mine framed. Love you, Tobie!

Tony Hart Dead at 83

This is for any UK readers out there and my artist friends. Tony Hart was well known throughout Great Britain for his children's shows, Take Hart and Hartbeat. He taught children craft projects and encouraged their creativity through drawing. He held drawing competitions and would display the winner's artwork on the wall during his show. He won several Baftas and had a popular plasticine character sidekick that he called Morph. (he looks a little like Hanky, the Christmas poo from Southpark) Unfortunately he suffered two debilitating strokes and was left with no choice but to retire in 2000.

He told The Times: 'Today my studio lies abandoned, and I spend most of my day confined to my chair.
'Not being able to draw is the greatest cross that I have to bear, for it has been my lifetime passion. But, I endeavour to stay cheerful, as there is nothing to be done about my condition.'

He passed away early this morning from complications stemming from his strokes.
